Applications are now open for 2024 Jurzykowski Summer Polish Grants! Open to Harvard undergraduate and graduate students.

Graduate Summer Language Study

Summer funding for current graduate students to attend summer Polish-language courses in Poland (U.S. programs are eligible as well). This grant may be used to pay tuition, fees, the summer program's room and board costs, required textbooks, and economy-class travel for an established summer program, up to $4,000 per student per summer. Students will have the possibility to receive this funding twice during their time at Harvard. Preference will be given to graduate students in Slavic or Comparative Literature, or other graduate students who have demonstrated an interest in studying Polish literature at Harvard, for example, by signing up for the graduate secondary field in Slavic, or by taking relevant language or literature courses in the Slavic Department.

Undergraduate Summer Language Study

Summer funding for current undergraduate students to attend summer Polish-language courses in Poland (U.S. programs are eligible as well). This grant may be used to pay tuition, fees, the summer program's room and board costs, required textbooks, and economy-class travel for any established summer program, up to $4,000 per student per summer. Students will have the possibility to receive this funding once during their time at Harvard. Preference will be given to Slavic concentrators or concentrators in other Departments at Harvard who have demonstrated an interest in studying Polish at Harvard, for example, by taking relevant language or literature courses in the Slavic Department.

Details:

Applications for summer 2024 undergraduate and graduate study are due by Monday, March 18, 2024, at 9:00 am. Decisions will be made by mid-April 2024.

Harvard University students are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students who are currently taking or have taken Polish language or literature at Harvard; students are responsible for confirming that Harvard will accept transfer credits from their chosen summer program. Students should closely follow Harvard's Travel Guidance (https://www.harvard.edu/coronavirus/travel-guidance/) and adjust all plans accordingly. Harvard College students can only accept one Harvard-funded opportunity per summer per the Office of Undergraduate Education Summer Funding Policy (https://oue.fas.harvard.edu/summer-2023-funding-policy).

Required documents:

1) Statement of purpose discussing: a) student's interest in Polish language and culture, including relevant courses taken in the Slavic Department; b) plans regarding the use of the language or further study of Polish culture, literature, and language after the summer; and c) choice of summer program, including an alternate plan in case international travel is not possible (this may include domestic travel in the United States or remote language study).

2) Detailed budget (program costs, air travel, lodging, etc.), including an alternate plan in case international travel is not possible.

3) Transcript (grade report from the Registrar), including all courses taken at Harvard.

4) CV.

Note: A short final activities report and financial accounting will be required after the end of the summer school, generally by September 2, 2024.

Note that funding can only be distributed to awardees once they have completed and submitted all pre-departure travel requirements.
