On Monday, April 9th the Slavic Department will be hosting a lunchtime conversation with Bela Shayevich, an award winning translator of Secondhand Time by Svetlana Alexievich.    Alexievich received a Nobel Prize in literature in 2015, and Bela Shayevich’s translation of Alexievich’s latest book in turn won a TA First Translation Prize just last month for “extraordinary, sustained virtuosity.” We will talk about her process in translating this emotionally demanding 700 page text, her long record of translating activists and poets (and translation as activism or poetry) as well as trends in Russian translation today. What gets translated, what does not, and why?
