Congratulations to Nataliya Shpylova-Saeed, Preceptor in Ukrainian, on the recent publication of her book [*Russia's Denial of Ukraine: Letters and Contested Memory*](https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781666941814/Russia’s-Denial-of-Ukraine-Letters-and-Contested-Memory). *Russia’s Denial of Ukraine* explores the gradual and long-lasting integration of contested memory in the cultural memory of Ukraine, emphasizing how narratives, which formed the contested memory in the nineteenth century, appeared to come to the fore with the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Letters reveal public discourses shaped by cultural and political developments centering on the Ukrainians’ endeavors to remember themselves as a nation distinct from the Russians; epistolary expressions by Mykola Hohol, Taras Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, and Volodymyr Vynnychenko are used to illustrate the circulation of contested memory, a process sponsored and supported in many ways by Russia. We are very proud of Nataliya for this important achievement!

Please join Professor Shypolova-Saeed for a [book talk on 10/23/24 at 5:00 p.m., Room K-354 CGIS North](https://www.huri.harvard.edu/event/nataliya-shpylova-saeed-russia-denial-of-ukraine-letters-and-contested-memory), moderated by Professor Bohdan Tokarskyi.
